Welcome to my blog!
Just as the title says, it’s about being fit for people “of a certain age.” I’m a fairly late-comer to fitness. Although I exercised off and on since leaving the military in 1982, I only really got into it when I turned 50. I’ve been consistently working out since then. I love how I feel after a run or a good workout. I’ve always struggled with depression and it didn’t take long for me to realize that the more I worked out, the better I felt mentally.
Fitness Over 50 isn’t about just physical fitness. It will also be about mental and spiritual fitness, healthy eating, natural remedies. In short, anything related to being healthy and keeping fit.
I’m always willing to try something new. I ran my first 5k on the 10th anniversary of 9/11 when I was 54. A year later, I ran my first half marathon. I’ll be sharing what I learn about running and about lots of other fitness-related stuff in this blog. I hope you’ll share your own experiences and thoughts.
Besides my passion for fitness, writing keeps me busy. I’m a freelance journalist writing primarily for The AdVantage and Community Health magazine, as well as other venues such as a yoga newsletter. La Vista CSA farm is another passion of mine. It’s an organic farm and I’ve been a shareholder since 2005 and was on the governing board for six years.
On the more personal side, I’m married with two boys, 28 and 21. My husband, a long-time smoker, was recently diagnosed with COPD. I suspect we’re in for a long journey; my own mother was diagnosed in 1982 with the disease and 20+ years later died of lung and brain cancer. It was watching her health decline that motivated me to start seriously taking care of myself.
